Ogoni Liberation Initiatives Celebrate Ogoni Day 2025: A Call to Action for Tangible Results
January 4, 2025
January 4, 2025, marked the celebration of OGONI DAY as the day the United Nations recognized the Ogonis as an indigenous people. The event was a poignant reminder of the struggles and sacrifices of the Ogoni people.
President of Ogoni Liberation Initiatives, Dr. Douglas Fabeke, in his remarks, tagged—EXODUS: A Celebration of Ogoni Martyrs. He emphasized that merely celebrating Ogoni Day without achieving significant results is insufficient, reflecting how the movement hasn't achieved significant progress since 1993. "Self-ego, pride, greed, and hatred have turned us against ourselves," he stated.
Fabeke urged the Ogonis to stay organized, speak in one voice, and maintain a common front against their enemies. "We cannot survive the battle divided as there are many dangerous exterminating factors and instruments that are being introduced against Ogoni, to wipe and clean it of all her inhabitants. We must resist being used against ourselves by others," Fabeke added.
During the event, Dr. Fabeke unveiled a groundbreaking platform designed to transform and benefit Ogoni communities affected by oil spillage. This initiative aims to bring tangible improvements to the lives of the Ogoni people.
Fabeke announced plans to establish an automobile industry in Ogoniland, creating job opportunities for the youth and stimulating economic growth. The initiative will be flagged off on 7 February, 2025. He also encouraged indigenes to access the Ogoni Liberation Initiative website (www.ogoniliberation.org) to register for the forthcoming SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM, which will be published on 13 January, 2025.
Fabeke expressed dissatisfaction with the Ogoni water projects executed by HYPREP, stating that they fall short of the standards recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). This criticism highlights the need for more effective and sustainable solutions to address the environmental challenges facing the Ogoni people.
The Ogoni Liberation Initiative's celebration of Ogoni Day 2025 served as a clarion call to action, emphasizing the importance of transitioning from mere celebrations to tangible, results-driven initiatives that improve the lives of the Ogoni people.
